Community loan for Straide and Foxford United

Rural Ireland was once the sole preserve of the GAA, with soccer effectively confined to larger urban areas.  But changing times and more diverse populations have broadened the range of sporting codes played across the country.  Ultimately, this greater pluralism will prove beneficial for all sporting organisations and the well-being of wider society.

For over 25 years, Straide and Foxford United have flown the flag for the ‘beautiful game’ in Mayo, after the two formerly independent clubs joined forces, in 1989.  Since then, the club has been hugely successful, competing at county, provincial and national level.  Straide and Foxford United now boast 155 members and field a minimum of 14 teams across all age levels - from under 10s to players over 35, the latter diplomatically known as ‘masters’.  But success brings its own pressures and, in common with many sporting outfits, Straide and Foxford required assistance to develop new playing fields and upgrade existing facilities, in order to cater properly for growing demand.

In addition, the club also has a policy of making its facilities available for a wider local use, including schools, athletic groups and other community bodies. With Clann Credo’s assistance the club undertook the successful development of an entirely new sports field that was made available for use by a variety of codes, all year round.

Everybody won: Straide and Foxford United acquired new facilities and the wider community gained an entirely new amenity.
