Community loan for Newport Town AFC

Founded in 1970, Newport Town AFC has grown from humble beginnings to a modern club with top-class playing facilities and currently have a playing membership of more than 300 people ranging from age 6 to age 70. Derryleigh Park, the home of Newport Town AFC, is located just outside the town of Newport and comprises of two sand-based playing pitches, a 60 x 40 metre flood-lit AstroTurf pitch, and a modern clubhouse.

In the last 15 years the club has grown from fielding 6 to 24 teams in the 2016/2017 season. The club fields teams from U.6 to Junior with participation in three leagues, LDSL for schoolboy teams, NTSFL for schoolgirl teams and the LDMC for youth and junior teams. The club’s facilities are used mid-week by the primary and secondary schools in the area and many other local groups. The club also has two employment scheme participants, one TUS and one CE scheme, creating jobs maintaining the grounds.

With the population of Newport growing significantly in recent years as it is now a well-established commuter town of Limerick city, the need and use of these facilities is growing along with it. With growth comes the need for a clubhouse and changing facilities for the community. Clann Credo saw the huge benefits that Newport Town AFC had on the communities in the town of Newport and the surrounding areas and was happy to help finance and support the growth and building of new facilities.
