Community loan for Abbeytown/Abbeyview Residents' Association

Clann Credo's support for work undertaken by the Abbeytown/Abbeyview Residents' Association encapsulates the role of social finance in the community.
 
Theirs is neither particularly large nor a complex project, nor is it the sort of work that will garner significant public attention. Yet, over the years, the combined efforts of its members have done more to improve quality of life in this estate than many a grandiose vanity project could.
 
The association was established by residents in the 1980s, with the simple but hugely important aim of ensuring the upkeep of the estate. This ranged from the maintenance of green areas and shrubbery, to litter awareness and painting the homes of elderly residents. A fee is charged with the proceeds used to purchase equipment - a lawnmower - and supplies - flower baskets etc.
 
By focusing on the 'lived environment' for the entire community, the association has demonstrated the clear value of pooling resources and working together. And the ongoing upgrade of the estate gives residents a personal stake and a tangible connection to the place where they live. That deep sense of community and common purpose only grows over time and requires a huge investment of enthusiasm and energy, a quality you cannot buy. In 2007, the association's work won third place in Mayo's Pride of Place awards.
 
In 2009, when resources were required to further enhance the area - new lighting, trees, benches, a play area for children - the association approached Clann Credo. Satisfied that the work was delivering a genuine social gain we were happy to help.
