Charity Allotment Project Wins Horticultural Awards

An allotment project set up by a charity to help people with epilepsy to improve their life skills and quality of life, has been awarded four national awards by the RDS Horticulture Committee.

The project near Malahide, Co. Dublin, is managed by the Epilepsy Care Foundation and consists of 300 allotments, a clubhouse facility for training as well as a recreation area. Seventy-five of the allotments have been reserved for people with epilepsy and related conditions.

The RDS Horticulture Committee awarded the project second prize in the "Allotment Providers" category, second and third places in the "Allotment Presentation" category and second prize in the "Allotment Growth and Management" category.

Earlier this year, the Epilepsy Care Foundation applied for social finance from Clann Credo to help get the project off the ground. Clann Credo supported the project on the basis that it addressed a deficit in training and recreational facilities for people who live with this debilitating condition. See www.epilepsycare.ie.
